Your help is needed! The historic Deschutes Railroad water at Harris Canyon is 100 years old this year. The tower stands on property owned by Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) in Sherman County, 11 miles upstream from the mouth of the Deschutes River. In October of this year, the water tower will be restored by volunteer efforts. Funding is needed for scaffolding, roofing materials and historic signage.  ODFW and The Northwest Chapter of the National Railroad Historic Society are supportive of this project. Sherman County Historical Society (SCHS) is working with the project and will handle contributions through their 501(c)(3). SD Deacon Corp. of Portland, under the direction of Doug Campbell, is volunteering the labor. Jerry Tanquist of The Dalles and Ron Walp of Maupin are coordinating the restoration project. This month the water tower roof and other elements of the structure were restored. The scaffolding is down! We’re almost there! Funding is still needed for interpretive signage, future maintenance and a few remaining tasks.
