Sherman County
Historical Society is leading Sherman County's Christmas ornament project
for the national Christmas tree. County residents interested in producing
ornaments for this tree are invited to meet at the Sherman County Museum in
Moro from 10-2 with a sack lunch on July 19.
Sherman County artisans are invited to construct ornaments 8 to 12 inches in size, large enough to be seen when hanging on a tree 65-70 feet tall. Ornaments must be light enough to hang without bending or breaking branches, weighing less than three pounds. They must be constructed from materials that will not mold, mildew or decompose, and must be highly weather resistant to withstand possible rain, snow, ice and wind. The use of hot glue and epoxy are recommended. Each ornament must have an attached five-inch wire hanger. Artisans should bring ideas, designs and materials to consider. A category for this ornament project appears in the 2002 Sherman County Fair Book; ownership of exhibited ornaments will go to the Society for the project. Oregon will supply the 70-foot holiday tree to grace the west lawn of the Nation’s Capitol for the first time. In addition to one large tree, Oregon will send over 50 smaller trees to go inside the Capitol. Oregon will send 4,000 ornaments to decorate the tree, a minimum of 100 from each of our 36 counties. Ornaments should represent Oregon's rich past and present, diversity, heritage and beauty. Anyone from Oregon can get involved -- students, families, individuals, 4-H groups, Scouts, clubs, senior citizens. Ornaments will be selected based upon arrival date and adherence to the design requirements. Ornaments will be displayed from December 13, 2002 through early January of 2003. The deadline for Sherman County to have all ornaments at the Umpqua National Forest; Supervisor’s Office, P.O. Box 1008, 2900 NW Stewart Parkway, Roseburg, OR 97470 is September 30, 2002. The national-award-winning Sherman County Museum and Visitor Information Center in Moro is open daily from ten until five.
