Sherman County Museum Receives Grant
From Oregon Community Foundation

The Sherman County Historical Museum is the recipient of a $7,500 grant from the John and Jane Youell and the Mr. and Mrs. William B. Mersereau Funds of The Oregon Community Foundation for the purpose of producing an exhibit to tell the story of dry-land cereal grain production and soil conservation. With the $13,000 budgeted for this project for this year, this grant makes possible some construction and production before next summer, according to Erling Jacobsen, Museum President.

The Museum’s mission is “…to gather, preserve, research, interpret, exhibit and publish materials relevant to the history of Sherman County.” The exhibit is in the final stages of design and planning with production to begin after the museum closes in October. Friends and members of the Museum and private foundations generously funded a building for this purpose and several large farm implements are on hand.

The Oregon Community Foundation, established in 1973, manages charitable funds donated by individuals, families and businesses to enhance and support the quality of life in their communities. Today, the foundation’s endowment consists of more than 600 funds with combined assets of $300 million. The foundation makes grants through an application process that involves local citizens in the review and evaluation of requests for funds. Application materials are available through the foundation’s Portland office, 621 S.W. Morrison, Suite 725, Portland, Oregon 97205.

The Sherman County Historical Museum is open daily from ten until five.
