The Dalles Chronicle 10/3/99 Moro--Thanks to a general operating grant of $20,000
from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS),
the award-winning Sherman County Historical Museum will proceed
with professional planning
Included is funding for consultants to assist in developing a collections care manual and a marketing plan to guide the museum's all-volunteer staff, archival supplies, accounting and workshop fees. According to Bobbi Driscoll, president, "Museums that qualify for this support show outstanding performance in all areas of museum operations. Museums around the country sent in 973 applications for these highly competitive IMLS grants. Recipients represent a broad range of museums...art and history to botanical gardens and zoos. The grant may be used for enhancing educational services and strengthening collections care. Grants are based on a formula equal to 15 percent of the museum's operating budget and are spent over a two-year period. A museum may not apply again for two years. Other Oregon institutions receiving funds in this grant period include the Columbia River Maritime Museum, Deschutes Historical Center, Aurora Colony Historical Society, Schneider Museum of Art in Ashland and Berry Botanic Garden in Portland. The amount awarded nationwide was $15,620,260
to 186 institutions from a field of 973 applicants. Each applicant performs
a self-evaluation involving every aspect of its operations, from
collections care and maintenance to education programs and exhibits.

experience, evaluate each
